Is your console ready for GTA 6?
Pick your console, type in how much space is free and how fast your internet is. You get a straight answer on storage, the download time, and the latest moment you can start downloading and still play at midnight.
Find your free space under Settings → Storage → Console Storage. Don't know your speed? Test it here and use the download figure.
Enter your free space. Your PS5 (original, 825 GB) has about 667 GB usable in total, so GTA 6 at the high estimate would take about 30% of it.
Enter your download speed to see how long the download takes and when to start it.
Where the numbers come from
Rockstar has not published an install size for GTA 6. Every exact figure online is an estimate, and some, like a viral “676 GB” claim, are simply fake. This checker uses a planning range of 150 to 200 GB, based on comparable open-world games plus a launch patch. Red Dead Redemption 2 already needed well over 100 GB, and GTA 6 is bigger in every direction.
We recommend 250 GB free rather than 200. Consoles need some working room while installing, and the first patch tends to arrive within days of launch. When Rockstar or the console stores publish the real size, this page will switch to it.
Usable space by console
The number on the box is not what you can use. The system software takes its share first. Approximate usable space:
- PS5 (original, 825 GB): about 667 GB
- PS5 Slim (1 TB): about 842 GB
- PS5 Pro (2 TB): about 1,890 GB
- Xbox Series X (1 TB): about 802 GB
- Xbox Series S (512 GB): about 364 GB
The 512 GB Xbox Series S is the tightest. At the high estimate, GTA 6 alone would fill more than half of it, so plan what to remove now rather than on preload night.
Making room without losing anything
- Move, don't delete. PS5 and Xbox Series consoles can park games on an ordinary USB drive and move them back later in minutes. GTA 6 itself has to run from the internal drive or a supported expansion (an M.2 drive on PS5, an expansion card on Xbox), but older games can wait on USB.
- Clear captures. Video clips from the share button quietly eat tens of gigabytes.
- Remove what you finished. Your saves stay in cloud or console storage; the game files can be downloaded again whenever you want.
How the download time is worked out
Gigabytes times eight, divided by your speed in megabits per second, gives the best-case seconds. We add 15% for normal overhead. On launch week the store's servers will be under heavy load, so treat the result as a minimum. If your console is on Wi-Fi far from the router, real speed can be half of what a speed test next to the router shows. A cable is the biggest single improvement.
That is why preloading matters. It opens on November 12, a week before launch. Starting that night removes almost all of the risk, even on a slow connection. For the full list of dates and the scams to ignore, see our launch checklist, and keep an eye on the countdown.
