If you're thinking about pre-ordering GTA 6, the decision comes down to two questions: which edition, and whether to pre-order at all. Here's the practical version, with an honest take rather than a sales pitch — because the two editions are closer than the $20 gap makes them look.
The basics
The game launches November 19, 2026 on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S. It's digital-only at launch — even the physical boxes contain a download code rather than a disc, so there's no real 'collector's disc' reason to buy physical this time. Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026, and preload begins November 12, 2026, so you can have it installed and ready before launch day.
Standard vs. Ultimate
Standard Edition is $79.99. Ultimate Edition is $99.99. Crucially, both contain the full game and the full story — the Ultimate Edition does not lock any missions, characters, or map behind a paywall. What the extra $20 buys is premium in-game vehicles, weapons, and apparel for both Jason and Lucia, plus some exclusive shop access.
That framing matters. If you care about starting with a bit of extra flash and don't mind paying for cosmetics, Ultimate is a reasonable upgrade. If you mainly want the game and expect to earn your own cars and gear through play — which is most of the fun in a GTA game — Standard gives you the identical experience for less. There's no wrong answer, but don't let 'Ultimate' pressure you into thinking Standard is somehow incomplete. It isn't.
The pre-order bonus (and whether it's a reason to rush)
Here's the genuinely useful part: any pre-order placed before November 20, 2026 unlocks the Vintage Vice City Pack — a set of 1980s-themed in-game items — regardless of which edition you buy. The bonus is not exclusive to Ultimate, and the cutoff is the day after launch. So there's no need to pre-order months early to secure it; you have until launch week.
That takes most of the urgency out of the decision. There's no meaningful penalty for waiting to see reviews and early gameplay before you commit, as long as you order before that November 20 cutoff if you want the pack.
Our honest recommendation
For most people: buy Standard, and there's no rush to do it today. Wait for launch-week impressions if you're on the fence, then order before November 20 to keep the Vintage Vice City Pack. Only reach for Ultimate if the premium cosmetics genuinely appeal to you — not because the name implies you'll miss out on the game otherwise. You won't.
